Preston, get a grip.
This may be a year later, but seriously, you are going to have crowded parking lots and foreign customers no matter where you are in the ENTIRE WORLD.
Here, it's Americans, who crowd and push and get uppity over everything--they come here to hunt and fish and often blatantly ignore all the regulations. Do the Canadians moan and complain about it? No. Because we're smarter than that. If a foreigner comes to your country and spends their money on your goods or services then you should be thankful because it is only fuelling YOUR country's economy.
ANYONE has the potential to be a whiny, annoying customer-- I think it is ridiculous that you demonize a nationality when I am SURE American customers can be just as annoying, rude etc etc etc. Everyone can be that person, just depends on the day.
You need to take a minute and recognize the truth of the matter -- your government wouldn't have created the tax exemption if they weren't okay with it. Plain and simple. You come off sounding bitter that you still have to pay your 8.5% tax while others may be exempt.
The thing about HST that really gets people is that the government extended the taxation umbrella to goods and services that weren't currently taxed by both GST and PST (it was either one or the other, some items were not taxed at all). So instead of paying 5% tax on your $200 electrical bill, now people are paying a whopping 13%. Oh, and don't forget fuel oil or natural gas, those both went from a 5% tax to 13%, so on a $900 fuel bill you end up paying almost $200 in taxes. It is absolutely ludicrous, and I am sure that if the tax roles were reversed Americans would be doing cross border shopping too.
As for government kick-backs --that's a bloody laugh. There used to be quarterly GST incentives, but only if you qualified for them (meaning making next to no money) -- the government has replaced these with quarterly HST incentives, but they are only paying you about 100$ every 3 months IF you make less than 40k a year (and only ONE individual in each household can claim it--this includes roommates which is completely lame). With the cost of inflation on the rise, things are getting out of hand, especially with private companies adding endless surcharges for their services (Hydro One's Debt Retirement charge anyone?) as much as I would hate to leave Ontario.. Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatoon and Alberta are starting to look more appealing, because hey! you don't have to pay HST on the properties you buy there.
Good grief. |
