British Columbians shopping in Washington state are eligible for a tax break when the harmonized sales tax comes into effect on July 1. Under state law, retailers in Washington can exempt visitors from the 6.5 per cent state sale tax, plus any additional county sales tax, provided levies in their home province or state are lower than three per cent. State officials consider the 12-per-cent HST a “value-added tax”, not a sales tax, meaning British Columbians are eligible for the tax break.
