Today we came back north from WA into BC by car. We were within our duty free allowance, and declared our purchases, but not required to pay HST at the Canadian border. Perhaps if we exceeded our allowance, they would have charged duty plus HST on the overage. Since we don't normally exceed our duty free allowance, we are not likely to find out. Anyways, based on our experience, they don't collect HST at the border. It makes sense, since it would take more time and manpower to collect the taxes, and would slow the border traffic to a crawl. |
