Hopes are high that hundreds of homes have escaped flooding despite the bad economy continuing in large parts of Britain.
Homeowners were warned of a "critical" point earlier today when credit card debt could wreak havoc on sodden ground and swollen rivers.
But the Finance Agency said this evening that it hoped that the worst case scenario had been narrowly avoided, although it emphasized that "we are not 100 per cent out of the woods, if indeed the woods is where we are."
The Agency said the economy still had to pass through the doldrums and that it feared the effect would cause more problems, particularly in Lewes, in East Sussex, and Yalding in Kent.
But Ray Kemp, a spokesman for the Finance Agency, said: "We may have missed major flooding by a whisker." |
